BK Bather makes my day interesting…
So its another day at the internship…but things are getting REAL good now.
And on days when there is no noon show b/c of olympics…it becomes slow. But, a desolate newsroom creates more work that the intern can actually do. Plus, people called in sick today (including one of the executive producers) so we were a bit short staffed. I kicked in to help out, of course.
Then there are little gems like the BK Bather that come along and make things interesting. Here’s the deal. Last night on the midnight news (delayed b/c of olympics on NBC) on of our reporters broke the story about a guy taking a bath in a Burger King Sink in Xenia, Ohio. By morning it was a national sensation with links to her story appearing on Drudge Report, MSNBC, FOX, etc. It is a sensation now. And…Inside Edition caught word of the story, made contact with the guy (age 25) who calls himself Mr. Unstable. Turns out they booked our studio and sat truck so he could come in and do an interview. He makes his way to the station, does his thing with Inside Edition, and then our reporter has a turn with him…making our hits and ratings go up even more. Not to mention that our logo and studio appeared on Inside Edition’s National Broadcast tonight. fun.
I went in the studio and peeked in on the interviews – the guy is a nut. Crazy hair and makeup…the whole bit. Anyways…that made it interesting.
I also wrote some stories or the 5, as per usual. And…since we didn’t have a whole lot of personell today, I took up answering the phones and such. I also booked a few interviews tomorrow…so that took some phone tagging, etc to do. We have interviews lined up with a former hometown Olympian, Schul, and a coworker and friend of a current Olympian, Fountain. I arranged and landed those. Also put in a few other stories into the futures and newstips!
Run scripts to the set and talked to people in Parkervision…fun. I am getting the hang of it now…getting to do a lot…and learning a TON as always. Fun stuff. I don’t want it to be over. And will try to put in some more time before I go back to school.
So much to do yet. Maybe i’ll blog in the next day or so about all of the other things going on in my life right now as well as back to school preparations.
ttfn…I am off to do Crest White Strips and watch Bravo TV!

Internship Update
The days of working local TV news are exciting. For me. At lease for now.
I am enjoying my internship. It is filled with excitement and all sorts of new opportunities and learning experiences. I know I am going to miss it when I go back to school. I took my internship early — before I had ANY Tv classes at the college level. So…going into it knowing only radio has opened my eyes to all sorts of lovely things. I will sadly miss a commercial broadcast when I have to do classroom stuff and realize that we have no live trucks, no satellites, no mobile newsrooms or bureaus. It will be such a bummer to have “in studio” shots as the only option. Oh well. Someday I will work in the commercial business.
But, on a daily basis I learn something new. Have a new experience, get to do something different, etc. Just today, I learned how to do VOD stuff and dub it to tape. I also learned how to roll on a live satellite feed. Its nice to know. I have, now, and understanding of the newsroom, gathering, and the whole process. I know how it works, what has to be done, and I am learning HOW to do it. I am helping as much as I can around the newsroom…and I am loving it. I love it when there is breaking news and lots of things have to happen all at once. Its exciting, adrenaline rush, etc. I love it…
I am writing as many stories as I can. VOs, VOSOTs, Packages, etc. Its fun to get something raw, turn it around to a script, look up video, cue it, package it, edit it, and program all of the CGs and presenter instructions. I really like it…and when I do it COMPLETELY on my own…its even more satisfying.
So when I go home at night and see my work on the TV…it is awesome. I am also learning all of the behind the scenes stuff and am able to pick it out and realize it on air. its fun.
In other news…we start our new graphics package tomorrow…changing the look and feel and moving our bug to the right instead of old left. fun and neat. We also took a power hit at the station this AM which made some of the computers and servers, etc go wacky. And out IT guy is out on vaca…that was fun. We also lost CC for about all of the 90 minutes. FCC will love us for that…(so will the deaf).
In other news. I took a shopping spree today after work and now have no money. But it felt good. I bought 3 pairs of shorts and 2 polos. NICE. I wanted a hat from hollister that I saw online…but they didn’t have it in the store…and i was pissed. I REALLY WANTED IT. ugh.
thats all. Time for white strips and Kathy Griffin.

Two Live shots, One Day
Today I was graced with the joy and excitement of going on two live shots. Something that doesn’t happen very often at all. Usually a live truck can only house two people (a reporter and engineer/videographer). Well…today the circumstances dictated that the reporter travel separate from the photog. So…that meant that there was extra room for drewie in the truck! yay!
At noon I went to the courthouse and we reported on new developments in a court case (in the noon show 2 times). And then at 5 and 6 I went to the water park to report on heat-related issues. T’was a fun time as always. Getting to hang with reporters and also the joy of being in the field LIVE.
It always attracts very unusual and odd/scarey people over to the truck to harass you about something or another. So its entertaining.
Thats the report of the day really. I am off for a whole DAY for the first time in like 12 days or something ridic like that. So I am going to enjoy sleeping in tomorrow, relaxing and getting some of my “to do” list done. I travel to Athens in a week and I am very excited for that visit. Should be a fun time…and nice to get away from my boring summer life to visit my friends and back to my college life.
That’s

I don’t normally brag, but…
I don’t normally send out e-mails to brag about myself…but this is kind of a big deal. Too big not to pass along. Hope you find it interesting.
Today (Wednesday) I was sitting in our newsroom here at school working my regular shift at WOUB News. I knew that the newsroom had been dedicated yesterday and was aware that Roger Ailes was in town. However, I figured that by the time that I would get in there today, he would no longer be around…although we were advised to look nice and be prepared for his appearance at any time.
So…I was sitting at my computer station working on a story and preparing for my newscast when all of the sudden, Roger Ailes just walked in and sat next to me. The dean of my college was also there and were both sitting RIGHT next to me. There was a large posse with him, but he was right next to ME. I went about my business and tried not to be too shocked that such a huge name was right there. Eventually we all introduced ourselves to each other and he just sat and watched all of us work and carried on conversations with the newsroom staff for a good 30-45 mins. I couldn’t believe it.
Now, you all know that I am a CNN junkie…and haven’t been a huge fan of FOX News. I still remain a CNN fan, but I have to be appreciative of what Roger did for us here at OU and Scripps. Our new newsroom is amazing and such a tool for me. I’m really glad that he donated the funds that ultimately helps further my education.
Anyhow, here are a few links for you to check out regarding this story:

Toured the studio…
today at WDTN TV-2 in Dayton Ohio. I also saw the newroom, edit bays, video archives, graphics dept, etc. Met with the internship coordinator for an interview of sorts. We really just asked each other questions about the internship. I got to meet some of the people I will ultimately be working with. I am excited for it. It should be a good time this summer, and I can’t wait to start!

Good day.
For a change, today was good. I was legitimately happy, which has been rare over the past month. And more updates about my humdrum life.
