Internship Update

The days of working local TV news are exciting.  For me.  At lease for now.

I am enjoying my internship.  It is filled with excitement and all sorts of new opportunities and learning experiences.  I know I am going to miss it when I go back to school.  I took my internship early — before I had ANY Tv classes at the college level.  So…going into it knowing only radio has opened my eyes to all sorts of lovely things.  I will sadly miss a commercial broadcast when I have to do classroom stuff and realize that we have no live trucks, no satellites, no mobile newsrooms or bureaus.  It will be such a bummer to have “in studio” shots as the only option.  Oh well.  Someday I will work in the commercial business.

But, on a daily basis I learn something new.  Have a new experience, get to do something different, etc.  Just today, I learned how to do VOD stuff and dub it to tape.  I also learned how to roll on a live satellite feed.   Its nice to know.  I have, now, and understanding of the newsroom, gathering, and the whole process.  I know how it works, what has to be done, and I am learning HOW to do it.  I am helping as much as I can around the newsroom…and I am loving it.  I love it when there is breaking news and lots of things have to happen all at once.  Its exciting, adrenaline rush, etc.  I love it…

I am writing as many stories as I can.  VOs, VOSOTs, Packages, etc.  Its fun to get something raw, turn it around to a script, look up video, cue it, package it, edit it, and program all of the CGs and presenter instructions.  I really like it…and when I do it COMPLETELY on my own…its even more satisfying.

So when I go home at night and see my work on the TV…it is awesome.  I am also learning all of the behind the scenes stuff and am able to pick it out and realize it on air.  its fun.

In other news…we start our new graphics package tomorrow…changing the look and feel and moving our bug to the right instead of old left.  fun and neat.  We also took a power hit at the station this AM which made some of the computers and servers, etc go wacky.  And out IT guy is out on vaca…that was fun.   We also lost CC for about all of the 90 minutes.  FCC will love us for that…(so will the deaf).

In other news.  I took a shopping spree today after work and now have no money.  But it felt good.  I bought 3 pairs of shorts and 2 polos. NICE.  I wanted a hat from hollister that I saw online…but they didn’t have it in the store…and i was pissed.  I REALLY WANTED IT.  ugh.

update time

Its been a while.  I know.  Im sorry.  I have been sort of sick and also very busy.  Still interning and working half time.  That makes me a busy boy.  Plus I had to be down a few days this week to deal with a cold/allergies/sinus, etc.  baah.

So, I went to visit my friends at college a weekend ago.  It was fun.  My friend Erica turned 21, so I went down for her party.  It was nice to visit all of them, hang out, have a good time, etc.  I enjoyed my time there.  And it was nice to get away again from my life at home over the summer and hang out with my friends MY AGE.  So yeah…I also visited a few other people on my 4 day get away.  nice. too many cloves and beer made me sick i think…oh well.

Back home I am chilling a little bit now.  My work hours got cut to just a day and a half a week for the rest of the summer.  My last day will be August 16th.  Im not going to mess with being on a nother schedule for 2 weeks for the end of summer.  I have frankly had it with my employer…and it is just no longer worth my time or energy.  So I am done and moving on.  It has been a mutually good relationship up until now…but i have come to realize that it is just my time to move on.  I deserve bigger and better (not to mention higher paying).

Things at the internship are GREAT.  I am actually able to DO things now.  I had been watching before and learning…but now I am at the point where I can start writing, logging, yadda yadda.  So now my stories are making it to the broadcast TV airwaves mostly on the noon and 5, 530, and 6 shows.  Its been a blast.  I like it.  I am happy and gaining so much experience and clips.  Its dandy.

I plan to work and over night and a weekend sometime before the end of summer.

As for everything else in my life…i have had some down time to relax.  I am going to visit my family as much as I can over the next few weeks before I go back to school.  I am also sleeping and resting as much as I can.  Fall will be busy and no time to sleep, so i might as well enjoy it now.  I have started crest white strips and i am on my entertainment kick with the Red Box movies.  Just $1 gets you a movie for 24hrs!  great.  I love it.

Good day.

For a change, today was good. I was legitimately happy, which has been rare over the past month. And more updates about my humdrum life.

yay for update!

Its been so so long, but I am finally getting around to updating.  Its more out of boredom than anything.  Summer sucks for me for a multitude of reasons.  I am at home…with the rents…living here away from school, friends, fun, etc.  I don’t have a social life and I am already going insaine.  I don’t know how I am going to go another two months!  Lots of emergency trips to Athens are in store.

On another note, I have started my internship.  I love it so far.  I have just been watching for now…which is fine and needs to be done…but I really want to start doing things.  Seeing how a REAL newsroom and production takes place has definately inspired me.  I know this is what I want to do.  Its exciting…no day is the same, etc.  For instance…on my first day there was a plane crash that sent the newsroom into breaking news mode and sparked a lot of excitement.  It was neat to see and be a part of.  I want to be a producer now I have decided.  Its much more up my alley than being a reporter and infront of the camera.

I have also been working at the greenhouse again.  Although they aren’t giving me a whole lot of hours and i am not on the schedule.  It kinda bums me out.  I was excited to go back there and work…and I NEED the money.  I am poor right now and I dont like it one bit.  Boo!.  Nonetheless I am harassing them to give me hours in the blistering heat doing stupid stuff.  Why do I keep that job?!?!?!

I have successfully moved back home from school and I made the transition quickly and easily.  I put away all of my stuff and stowed it away for the fall.  I just really want to keep busy with the internship and the working so i can stay busy, out of trouble, not spend money, and make some.

I will be leaving this Sunday morning EARLY for Asheville, NC.  I am going with my family on vacation to Biltmore area and doing that as well as some of the nature things.

That will take up some time…and then it will be the fourth of July time when I get back.  Hard to believe that so soon, but I am excited.  I love the fourth…and then summer will be progressing nicely.  I will maybe pick up a few more days at the internship to keep me busy and do some freelance landscape work.  I have a client I could work for now, so I think i will take advantage of that so I have some income.

Well buddies…thats it for now…I’ll update when I get back from vaca.

Toured the studio…

today at WDTN TV-2 in Dayton Ohio.  I also saw the newroom, edit bays, video archives, graphics dept, etc.  Met with the internship coordinator for an interview of sorts.  We really just asked each other questions about the internship.  I got to meet some of the people I will ultimately be working with.  I am excited for it.  It should be a good time this summer, and I can’t wait to start!

As of today things are pretty much settled that I will be an intern at WDTN Channel 2, an ABC affiliate in Dayton, Ohio for the summer!

I am so happy and excited.  This should be pretty awesome!
